Turf wall[ edit ] From Milecastle 49 to the western terminus of the wall at Bowness-on-Solway, the curtain wall was originally constructed from turf, possibly due to the absence of limestone for the manufacture of mortar. This took place in two phases; the first from the River Irthing to a point west of Milecastle 54 , during the reign of Hadrian, and the second following the reoccupation of Hadrian’s Wall subsequent to the abandonment of the Antonine Wall though it has also been suggested that this second phase took place during the reign of Septimius Severus.

The line of the new stone wall follows the line of the turf wall, apart from the stretch between Milecastle 49 and Milecastle 51 , where the line of the stone wall is slightly further to the north. Offsets were introduced above these footing courses on both the north and south faces , which reduced the wall’s width. Where the width of the curtain wall is stated, it is in reference to the width above the offset.

Two standards of offset have been identified: Standard A, where the offset occurs above the first footing course, and Standard B, where the offset occurs after the third or sometimes fourth footing course.

This incurred some damage to the water sculpture. In the meantime, please do keep an eye on the Get North social media accounts and we will provide an update on timescales as soon as possible.

Rapid transit A rapid transit system is an electric railway characterized by high speed and rapid acceleration. It uses passenger railcars operating singly or in multiple unit trains on fixed rails. It operates on separate rights-of-way from which all other vehicular and foot traffic are excluded i. It uses sophisticated signaling systems , and high platform loading. This set rapid transit apart from horsecars , trams , streetcars , omnibuses , and other forms of public transport.

Though the term was almost always used to describe rail transportation, other forms of transit were sometimes described by their proponents as rapid transit, including local ferries in some cases. The term bus rapid transit has recently come into use to describe bus lines with features to speed their operation. These usually have more characteristics of light rail than rapid transit. They are consequently designed for operations in tunnel, viaducts or on surface level but with physical separation in such a way that inadvertent access is not possible.

Maps of the preferred route for the northern extension of HS2 It said:

Five large Crampton singles, Nos. to (Fig. 57) having proved unsatisfactory due to lack of adhesive weight, Gooch designed a class of six-coupled goods engines to take the boilers of the single-wheelers, these being almost as good as new owing to the engines had done little work.

Services[ edit ] All passenger services on the Tyne Valley line are operated by Northern , although a handful of services which operate beyond Carlisle along the Glasgow South Western Line are operated using ScotRail stock – the train operating company and crew changes at Carlisle. Services are operated by diesel multiple units ; Class Pacers and Class Super Sprinters which were introduced in the late s. The line is also used for freight and is an important diversionary route during East Coast Main Line closures, although the line is not electrified.

The line was built in sections from onwards. The first section Hexham – Blaydon opened in March but services were then suspended until May after a local landowner objected to the use of locomotives specifically prohibited by the Act of Parliament. A temporary Tyne bridge was built at Scotswood to allow trains to reach a terminus at Forth Banks in Newcastle – this opened on 21 October From , trains ran to Carlisle Citadel station, and the old London Road station was closed.

In , the temporary bridge at Scotswood was removed, and a new iron Scotswood Bridge was built to replace it. In , British Rail closed the Scotswood Bridge , [3] which had become uneconomic to maintain. Tyne Valley trains from Newcastle were diverted to use the present route, crossing the King Edward VII Bridge south-west of Newcastle Central Station, and running via Dunston to Blaydon , on an upgraded section of the original route along the south bank of the Tyne that had previously been freight-only since the s.

Renaissance Now, let’s look at some specific examples. One type of atom that does not normally react is Neon. See the picture to the left. It already has the correct number of electrons in it’s outside electron layer so Neon does not react. Neon, along with Helium and Argon are known as non-reacting gasses because they do not need to react to be stable. Other types of atoms such as Hydrogen, Carbon, and Oxygen do not have the correct number of electrons to be stable by itself.

Instead they have to share electrons in molecules to get the correct number of electrons in their outside electron layer. Since we only have to look at the atom that is in the center of the molecule to find out it’s shape, we will concentrate only on Carbon and Oxygen. All the molecules illustrated on this page either have a Carbon or an Oxygen as the center atom.
