Young women are still looking for love but want less needy men. And the Rise of Women is coming out next month, and the Atlantic is previewing it in its September issue with Hanna’s piece about the so-called “hook-up culture” that has conservatives in a decade-long huff and much of the media in a sex panic. Amanda Marcotte Amanda Marcotte is writer for Salon. The typical assumption about hook-up culture is that it’s something men imposed on women, exploiting modern contraceptives and sexual liberty to get away with having sex with women without having to commit or do anything icky, like pretend to like them.

The narrative has always sat uneasily with me, as it’s based on the presumption that women are so foul that men will only put up with them in order to get sex. So I was stoked to discover that Hanna’s research led her to conclude that women aren’t being victimized by delusions of feminism and the men taking advantage of them.

Speaking to listeners of his “Dr. I’m not talking politically, I’m not talking about the result of the November sixth election; I am saying that something has gone wrong in America and that we have turned our back on God. I mean millions of people have decided that God doesn’t exist, or he’s irrelevant to me and we have killed 54 million babies and the institution of marriage is right on the verge of a complete redefinition.

Believe me, that is going to have consequences, too. And a lot of these things are happening around us, and somebody is going to get mad at me for saying what I am about to say right now, but I am going to give you my honest opinion: I think we have turned our back on the scripture and on God almighty and I think he has allowed judgment to fall upon us. I think that’s what’s going on. She has interviewed almost 20, students from over 20 colleges. Her research indicates that by the time one reaches their fourth year of college, 72 percent of students have had at least one hook up. A majority of people, college students in this particular study, have felt the need to test drive their relationship, or have given themselves to someone they met in class, at a party, or over tinder. Why is hooking up such a problem in today’s culture? For multiple reasons, but essentially the process of hooking up and breaking up is destroying the beauty of sex in the way that God intended.

Hooking up takes away from the beauty of intimacy and sex in the right context. Despite the fact that hooking up promotes the very physical act of giving yourself to someone, it destroys the beauty of what sex is meant to be – and the whole intimacy surrounding the gift of yourself to another human being. Yet hooking up promotes immediate gratification and selfish desires. We are living in a world enamored with the idea of finding ‘the one’ but the solution is to go out with as many people as possible and give yourself away to whoever asks in the idea of test-driving what you like and don’t like.

Hooking up is counter-intuitive to people who are looking for long-lasting relationships. Sleeping with someone before marriage doesn’t prevent relationship woes, or solve marriage. In fact, if anything, it can make it harder. With hooking up, your body is connecting with someone on a physical and emotional level long before you even know the character traits of the other person.

Marriage , Cohabitation , Dating , Single Life , Education , Religion On a typical college campus, everyone has something to say about hookup culture. Some students view the hookup as a form of liberation, shattering the last vestiges of sexual mores upheld now only by religious institutions. Others set up an alternative culture, seeking spaces where sexual purity is considered the coin of the realm.

In both cases, the hookup is assessed fundamentally as a sexual phenomenon. Yet, as Donna Freitas has demonstrated in The End of Sex , the root cause of the hookup is less about a promiscuous attitude toward sex and more about an inability to communicate and thus commit. For this reason, attending only to sexual ethics will have little effect on healing the hookup culture. They may refrain from sexual activity outside of marriage, but they still succumb to a persistent fear of commitment, terrified to commit themselves to loving another person beyond a couple of months.

Its director, Steven Spielberg, apparently isn’t much of a fan of it either. In fact, let’s leave the “apparently” out of it. I’m hoping some day I’ll see it again and perhaps like some of it. But it never happened. I recruited my children to help answer that.

Thus, my six-year old daughter and my year old son feasted their eyes on the film. My daughter warmed to it more, but both were fidgeting long before the exhausting minute running time was up. The film, as you probably know, is the tale of what happens when Peter Pan grows up.
